Dear Dorothy:
I don't quite understand exactly what a soul mate is.  I mean, I know it's about relationships and all that, but I feel there is so much more.  Can you explain?

You're right...it is about relationships, but the soul mate bond goes beyond ordinary relationships and delves more into the spiritual aspects of it.  First of all, you have to remember that there are different kinds of soul mates and when you realize what they are, you can use this knowledge to better understand your relationships and why certain people come into your life.

Dear Dorothy:
I have been with a girl for six months now.  I love her, but the magic just isn't there.  I feel she is more into the relationship than I am and I feel guilty about this.  Can you tell me if she is my soul mate and what I should do about this?

Many couples experience this as they get along further into their relationship and this is normal for some soul mate relationships. What I understand from what you have said is that you have a clear example of the companion soul mate relationship.  A companion soul mate is someone who comes into your life for companionship, sexual relations and/or child-bearing.  You are more involved intimately with this person than the karmic soul mate relationship but just don't have the spark that exists with the twin soul relationship.  My advice to you is realize that your girlfriend has come into your life for these purposes and nothing more.  You can be happy with this person for many reasons and once you understand this, both of you can lead prosperous lives.  You also have to understand that you have not met your twin soul yet and that person is still out there, but don't let this block your feelings with your girlfriend.  Life is short...enjoy each of your soul mate relationships!

Dear Dorothy:
There is a man at work I'm fond of.  While it is not a sexual relationship, I feel a closeness to him that I've never experienced before.  The catch is, I'm still married to a wonderful man who is just everything to him and I have no plans on leaving him.  I can't get this other man out of my mind, yet I know that there will never be a future with him, as I love my husband very much.  Do you have any advice for me?

What you have here is a clear example of the karmic soul mate bond.  Your husband is your companion soul mate and possibly could even be your twin soul.  This other man has come into your reason to teach you something or you teach him.  Perhaps, this is a test to see how much you love your husband.  Karmic soul mates come into people's lives for the sole purpose to teach.  There usually are no romantic feelings involved.  To go beyond the stage of friendship would be a mistake.  Learn from this relationship with this other man and go on with your life with your husband.  On the other hand, if you felt differently about this man you work with that would override your feelings with your husband, then you may have a problem that may have to be worked out.  Once you identify your feelings with each person who comes into your life, you can use the basic principles of the different soul mate bonds and apply them in your life so that no one gets hurt and therefore, everyone can live a happy and prosperous life.  The bottom line here is to be happy.  If you are not happy in a relationship, rethink the reason your mate has come into your life and make changes.

Dear Dorothy,
I'm a heterosexual female all the way, but I have a girl friend who has been in my life since we were kids. There's not another soul on this earth who knows us like we know each other.  Is there a name for this sort of soul mate?

You and your girlfriend share a very special relationship and are what we call karmic soul mates.  What people have to realize is that not all soul mate relationships fit into society's definition of the normal boy/girl relationship.  Your girlfriend has come into your life to teach you something or you to teach her or both.  She's there for you when you are at your highest peaks, as well as your lowest.  When things are rough for you, who is the first one you call?  Look at this relationship as the greatest gift you've ever received and enjoy the special bond you share with her!
