Interview with Linda Hullinger
Author of "A Puzzle Without A Box" Linda Hullinger has been communicating with children on the 'Other Side' for over three years, helping hundreds of parents connect with their child. Her goal is to provide healing for as many grieving parents and their children as she can reach. It is through her book, A Puzzle Without A Box, that we get a glimpse into the life of Linda Hullinger and her gift of being able to talk to children on 'the Other Side'. Linda lives in Louisiana with her husband and three children.
"In November of 1998, a young spirit who calls himself Edgar entered my life. He has scared me, delighted me, made me laugh out loud, and even led me to find antique typewriters, which I collect. But his mission here has not been to entertain me. Instead it has been to teach me how to help children on the Other Side."

TWL: Good morning, Linda, and thanks so much for granting The Writer's Life this interview!
Linda: Thank you, Dorothy. It's my pleasure.
TWL: Linda, I'd like to begin this interview with your new book, A Puzzle Without A Box. What prompted you to write this beautiful, inspirational book?
Linda: After I had begun holding meetings with grieving parents and giving them messages from their children on the Other Side, a published sci-fi author, Denny Vitola, suggested that I document my experiences and share them with others. Denny and I have a mutual friend, Sue Long Turner, author of Wings Born Out of Dust, whose son, Russ, is one of the spirits on the Other Side who is included in my book.
TWL: How long did it take you to write this book?
Linda: About 9 months.
TWL: Is this your first book?
Linda: Yes. My first published book.
TWL: Was writing always a part of your life?
Linda: Yes. As a child I wrote plays and short stories in school. Later at 19, I bought my first manual typewriter and began a novel. But then much later, after being married, having 2 children and pregnant with my third child, I began a Writer's Digest Short Fiction course. I completed it and then went on to take their Novel Writing course and the Advanced Novel writing course. By the time my youngest was 4 years old, I had had 12 short stories published and an agent for my novel. I then went on to write screenplays and signed a contract with an agent for those also. But then when my mother became sick with cancer in 1996, I stopped writing for many years. I didn't return to writing until Judy Collier asked me to help her edit her book, Quit Kissing My Ashes.
TWL: I understand you went with Infinity Publishing to publish your book. What are your experiences with them?
Linda: They have been courteous, helpful and I have been pleased with their service.
TWL: Can you tell us your first experiences with exploring the spiritual world?
Linda: As far back as I can remember, I have always had some sort of contact with the spiritual world; whether through dreams, seeing apparitions or empathically feeling others' pain and emotions.
TWL: Who is Edgar and how has he made such an impact on your life?
Linda: In the summer of 1996, I began a spirituality class taught by Mary Jo McCabe. Two years later, my oldest son, daughter, and I each witnessed the apparition of a young man on 3 separate occasions. When I went to Mary Jo's class the following week to question her about it, before I could ask about him, she told me that a young spirit had come to my home to teach me how to communicate with children on the Other Side. That was my confirmation that what we had seen was not a figment of our imagination and that Edgar had a purpose for coming into my life.
TWL: What message do you have for parents who have lost a child?
Linda: From my experience working with grieving parents, I have learned that there is never 'closure' but there is a way to find peace in the heart. And by that I mean accepting that their children are always still with them and giving them messages and signs as often as needed. Though sometimes the messages go unnoticed for as long as years at a time, the ultimate message is that they are still there with them in spirit.
TWL: Do you have spiritual guides who help you on this mission? Who are they and when did you first know of them?
Linda: Yes. Edgar was the first spirit who came to me. When I get signs from him, I know that he is bringing to me a child who has committed suicide. Kyle is another spiritual guide in that he seems to be the director of this mission. I get signs from him on a daily basis. There is Emily who brings to me the murdered children and Tanya who brings to me the very young children and babies. When I receive signs from Jason, I assume there will be teenagers coming to me who have been killed in a vehicle accident. And when Russ shows me his signs, then I know that I will be communicating with a child who has suffered from addictions. Sometimes they come in groups and then I have to decipher what it is that the newcomer has in common with the children who have given me signs. For example, if Russ gives me signs along with Edgar, I suspect that I will be communicating with a child who was suffering from addictions and committed suicide. Or if Jason comes to me followed by Russ, I sometimes learn that the child was killed by a drunk driver. It all depends on the way the messages are given.
TWL: On the cover of your book, there is a beautiful message. It goes, "Just because you can't see someone, it doesn't mean they aren't there." Can you explain this philosophy?
Linda: First I would like to explain why it was used on the cover. I was having difficulties coming up with a cover design for the book. But earlier, in November 2001, my daughter and I went to visit my grandmother in Florida. We stayed several days and the morning that we were to drive back, as I was carrying my suitcases out to the car, my grandmother went to the back bedroom, and returned with an old photo album. In her attempt to delay our leaving, she asked me to sit down and look through the pictures with her. My grandmother and I were very close and so, of course, I sat down at her dining table and began looking at old pictures.
During that time, I saw the photo that is now on the cover of my book and I found it to be an odd picture. I asked her if I could take it home, not really having a clue why. Several months later, when I needed a cover design and was distraught about what to choose, I finally gave up and told the kids on the Other Side to lead me to it.
About a week later, I was lying in bed when an image of that old photograph popped into my mind. I hadn't thought of it in months and wasn't even sure if I knew what I had done with it. But as soon as the image popped into my mind, so did the words, "Just because you can't see someone, it doesn't mean they aren't there." Then I got an image of that being on the cover of my book.
The philosophy in that statement is that in my work I have had to trust in what I couldn't see. And time and time again the children have proven to me that it is truly there.
TWL: Is your family supportive of your spirituality?
Linda: Yes. Very much so.
TWL: What has been your feedback from readers? What do they say to you about their interpretations of your books?
Linda: In general, most parents find comfort in the passages that I received from Edgar and the other children through clairaudience. They say that my book helps to answer their questions of how their children can communicate with them, where they are, and what they are doing on the Other Side.
TWL: Can you tell us about your workshops?
Linda: Previously, I held classes in which I chose a topic such as 'spirit guides or angels,' and would address each student with the information that pertained to them. Sometimes we would discuss past lives, or our purpose for being in this lifetime. Sometimes we discussed dreams and their meanings of how it applies in their everyday life. I also hold group meetings with grieving parents or siblings. And during that time, I relay messages from the Other Side to the grieving families. For those who would like more information on what I do and what to expect during a reading, they can check out my website at www.lindahullinger.com
TWL: Do you have plans for more books?
Linda: Yes. I am currently working on another book and also a screenplay.
TWL: Do you have any hobbies? What are they?
Linda: I love to read mysteries, and watch the classics like Alfred Hitchcock movies. TWL: I want to thank you so much for this interview, Linda. Do you have any final words tell those whose loved ones have passed on?
Linda: Always trust that they are still with you, and just keep your eyes and mind open for the signs. When you are ready to see and accept them, you will.
